Try a New Block of the Month

What a great idea!  A new year - a new block of the month!

Add some whimsy to your world.  Angels Four All Seasons can be made as a large quilt 64″ X 80″  or make several wall hangings… one for each season.  Hang them as a grouping or hang just one and switch it for the season.

PlayTime would be a great one to start when there’s a new baby born to someone close to you.  It’s a nine month project so it’ll be ready for the baby’s first birthday.  Most BOMs have a bigger price tag on the last shipment because it includes the extra fabric needed for the borders and layout.  This one gets the big one out of the way right at the start.  The first month has a lot of fabric for the rest of the months so that the dye lot matches.  The blocks have lots of toys and some traditional blocks.

If you’re itching to get started, Heart & Home ships around the 5th of the month.  You could be sewing this beautiful quilt by next week!  The colors are so pretty and romantic.  And no wonder – this quilt was made with the fabric line “Return to Romance” by Maywood Studio.  Start now and you’ll be finished by summer as this is a six month Block of the Month.

There are several more Block of the Month projects (18 in all!).  So instead of a New Year’s resolution, make a New Year’s “reservation” for a block of the month.  After you’ve done that, browse the rest of the quilt patterns and find a few projects to work on in between your BOM blocks.

New Designer – Tiger Lily Press

Have you checked out the newest Designer at Quilters Warehouse? Nicole Chambers-Kaya of Tiger Lily Press has a variety of designs from table runners to totes to full size quilts.

Do you have some favorite fabric that you really want to use but just don’t want to cut it up? Kabuki is the perfect table topper pattern to showcase those favorites. It’s fairly easy and will go together quickly. There are also instructions for place mats.

Autumn Splendor is a table runner with a more intricate looking design.  Large prints would work well for the center of the blocks.  The colors you choose for the rest of the fabrics will bring the project to life.   Don’t limit yourself to Autumn…. you could make one to suit each season.

And now for something completely different:  Ba-Da-Bing…Ba-Da-Boom…It’s a Basket.    You’ll find so many uses for these baskets.  Make any size you want. And any theme you want.  Use as a gift or as gift wrap!  Organize your sewing room.  Dress up a potted plant.  Put one on your dresser for makeup or nail polish bottles. How about one near your front door for keys?
Simple Quilts is a book with step by step instructions for 20 quilts.  They range in size from lap size to queen size.  Each quilt is shown in two color ways.  If you are new to quilting you will learn construction techniques and have some stunning quilts to show for your efforts.

Tiger Lily Press has lots more projects so browse away, and then browse through the rest of the quilt patterns at Quilters Warehouse.   And don’t forget – only a few more days to take advantage of the special pricing on the 6500P Memory Craft Janome Sewing Machine.

Bargain Bin

Finished with your Christmas shopping? Is your pocketbook close to empty? Check out the Bargain Bin at Quilters Warehouse.

You’ll find a variety of items at reduced prices. Some of them are “retired favorites” which means that once they are gone you won’t see them again… the designer has decided not to print these patterns again. So there are limited quantities available of these items.

Mabel Moose is a cute wallhanging. And it is half price! Who says a moose can’t show a feminine side? There a four looks from which to choose – or create your own look. Make several for a grouping of wall hangings.

If you want to make a larger quilt with straight seams only, Pinwheel Parade has directions for three size options: a queen, twin size, or a baby quilt. This quilt is from Tyquilts Designs.

For a smaller quilt, but with more of a challenge, you could try Psychedelic Centipede. A fun looking quilt and the name is fun to say!

Are you looking forward to Spring? The Potting Shed Window will keep your hopes alive as you struggle through the wintry weather. The pattern is for four blocks that are intended to be displayed in an old window. (Good excuse to head for the garage sales.) But you could use a woody looking fabric and sew sashing between the blocks and make the borders of the same fabric. The flowers are really pretty and you can make them as colorful as you want.

Look around and you’ll find a pattern you like and save money too. Of course, full price quilt patterns really don’t cost much. Especially when you think of all you can create with them!

Wrap it up Quilty style!

Have you finished all your quilty Christmas gifts? Not yet?! Hurry!!! Only 9 more days ‘til Christmas!

When you do finish, of course you are not really finished…. They need to be wrapped. How often do we sew, sew, sew, and then throw it in a gift bag. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! But, you worked hard and put a lot of yourself into your quilty gifts so wrap them that way. There’s no time like the present to present them in a way that adds to the present (puns intended). Here’s a few suggestions.

Tissue paper always adds a little something extra. Make it the final layer even if you don’t use a box.

Add some ribbon from fabric… perhaps a bit of fabric that matches the gift. Don’t worry about the frayed edges – they’ll add to the whimsy. Or zigzag stitch along the edges and the ribbon will be a bit curly.

Add a button to the ribbon.

Make a little card out of fabric: Cut fabric and paper to the same size. Stitch around the edges. Here’s your chance to use those decorative stitches. Stitch a straight line down the center fold. Write you message inside. Decorate the front if you want.

I was the lucky recipient of these last two. The presentation brought as much pleasure as the gift!

Whatever you do, have fun with it. And when you’re finished treat yourself to a visit to Quilter’s Warehouse and browse the quilt patterns to find your next project.
