Yes, you read that right.  Not Quilt Patterns. Quiltlet Patterns.  Quiltlets are itty-bitty quilts.  They are not miniature quilts – those are made just like full size quilts, with several blocks and a pattern.  Quiltlets are just one block.  When you are finished with the top you can sandwich it with batting and backing, then quilt it and bind it.  That’s a quiltlet.  Or you can frame the top and hang it on your wall. You probably won’t need to purchase any new fabric (sorry!).   You should have everything you need in your scrap pile.

These all finish at 12″ square and are from Sew Unique Creations.  Blazing Star is made of 24 diamond pieces.  Collinsville Rose Star uses hexagons and triangles.  Wyoming Valley is probably the simplest of the three with nothing more complicated than half square triangles.

There are 8 more quiltlet patterns by Sew Unique Creations.  Make them all and make a display on one of the walls in your sewing room.  Or in any room.  Sew and Show!

This patriotic quilt, American Beauty, is made with paper foundation piecing, applique and embroidery.  The finished 51″ square wallhanging will be a tribute to our flag and a showcase of your varied sewing skills.

Patriotic Stars & Stripes comes with instructions for two sizes: 53 1/2″ X 70″  or  28 1/2″ X 36″.  Directions are included for both hand and machine applique.

If you want to make a patriotic quilt but don’t want to do any applique, try Stars & Stripes.  This quilt pattern uses flying geese and will measure 75″ X 95″.  Or you can add borders and make a queen or king size quilt.

Our favorite Sue is in a patriotic mood – Sunbonnet Sue Rallies ‘Round the Flag.  She has so many holiday dresses in this miniature quilt (14″ square) and she’s waving her flag in every block.  There are instructions included to make the little flags, or you can use miniature flag fabric.

The Wave is made with 6″ blocks, each with one curved seam.  Follow the simple instructions for the curved seams, add a few appliqued stars and you’ll have a stunning quilt.

Some of these patterns would look great in other colors and it will change the whole look and tone and theme of the quilt.  In the same way, you can, of course, take many other quilt patterns that weren’t designed with a patriotic theme in mind, and change the colors to create a patriotic quilt.   And save your red, white, and blue scraps.  They’ll come in handy for smaller projects to decorate your home for summer barbeques and picnics.

Summer Breeze from The Sweet Tea Girls is made with 2 1/2″ strips.  Looks good in blues and browns.  Wouldn’t it look great if you used Moda’s Soiree jelly roll?  Talk about summer!

Cherries Jubilee is made from one layer cake.  This quilt finishes at 53″ X 53″ and would be perfect on a picnic.  If you have never sewn curves here’s your chance to learn.  Curvy instructions included!

Now, how about some cool, refreshing watermelon? A log cabin block in just the right colors, add some seeds in just the right spots and you have a Watermelon Picnic.  Another perfect picnic blanket!

Picnic is over, now for a walk through the garden.  Gracie’s Garden Sampler will brighten up any wall.  You choose fusible applique or traditional – instructions are included for both.

Are you hooked on making flying geese blocks? Then here’s a few quilt patterns that you should like.

Geese in the Fields is made of flying geese blocks and large square blocks. How easy can it get? 13 fat quarters will make this 57″ X 87″ quilt. The flying geese “randomly” placed in the border add interest to this design.

The Flying Goose is a vertical row quilt that you can make in a day.  It will make a great wallhanging or a doll quilt.  Reverse the direction of the geese in one of the rows for a slightly different look.  The pattern features designer Tara Lynn Darr’s “no fear” piecing instructions that will make the flying geese units a breeze to make.

Wild Goose Chase Through the Cabin combines Flying Geese and Log Cabin blocks.  A variations that adds Courthouse Steps blocks is also included.

And, if you are completely addicted to flying geese, here is a book and ruler that you will find absolutely necessary!  Flying Geese and More has instructions for 150!!! flying geese blocks using the Flying Geese X 4 No Math Ruler.  Make flying geese in sizes from itty-bitty (.75″ X 1.5″) to very large (3.5″ X 7″). You’ll have flocks and flocks of geese before you know it.

Here’s a really stunning quilt with lots of flying geese, among other blocks.  This quilt graced the cover Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine.  Lady of 10,000 Lakes, finishing at 99″ square,  will be a showpiece.

Another fun, striking quilt from Seams Like A Dream, Cambridge Twist is easier than it looks.  The wall hanging is made from just four blocks.  The quilt seems to be in constant motion.   The pattern includes instructions for three sizes:  wall hanging, lap, and twin.  Choose your fabrics carefully and this would make a great quilt for a guy.

You’ll get a lot of choices from Pillow Talk.  Four different designs - one for each season - and you can choose to make pillows or wall hangings – they’ll look great either way.

Meadow Flowers is made of weathervane blocks.  Easy to piece and the on point setting really shows them off.  This quilt would look great hanging on the wall . . . spring all year round.  Try it in soft muted colors or make a riotously bright meadow.
